Artist Statement (Senior Thesis):
Units are everywhere and everything is built from units. These units come together, interact, stack, are put together and patterns emerge. The way simple units are capable of forming such unpredictable yet amazing results is what fascinated and brought my attention to forms that embody so. Something so simple is able to gain the power manipulate something as intangible as space.
The units are bound together through a form of tension and contact. When the sides of two geometric shapes join within a 3D axis, a sharp edge is created and with the addition of many similar connections, geometric form is created. The geometric form becomes a unit and when together with many other forms, creates an even larger collective.
When arranged, interactions between simple units are capable of creating what is unfathomable alone. I seek to explore how by creating simple geometric unit blocks and repeating them, what sort of possible wholes that cannot form individually will emerge as a collective.
